"For me, the song represents a transitional time for the band. The development of our version of the song straddles the change over from a band that was half in New Jersey to the current all-Richmond four piece that we are.
Tricia and I first performed the song on tour in 2014 with Joe and Julie. We wanted to add love songs to the set because we were touring around Valentine's day. If I recall correctly, the song was Julie's idea. The song initially had Joe putting surf guitar noise over the top of my rhythm guitar and Tricia's motorik-influenced beat.
During the Fall of that same year, I met Todd and he joined the band. The first part he arranged was the seemingly inveterate bass line for the song. In January 2015, we made our first attempt to record the song at a mildly disastrous overnight session up in D.C. It is fortuitous that this session didn't yield results; if we had successfully recorded and released that version, we wouldn't have worked on recording the current version with Ben's guitar work.
When Ben joined us, the song became a show piece for his guitar work. The rest of us would basically perform the song around when Ben would finish soloing, look up, and give us a nod that meant "OK, back to you." Some of my favorite performing moments were nights when Ben was really in the mood to solo and would just stretch out for a bit. I remember just such a night at Strange Matter where I had to remind myself to pay attention to my own playing. Recording Ben's guitar work involved more beer and smoke breaks than guitar playing. It was basically a two week stretch of just hanging out at my house after work each night and eventually, when it got late, saying 'well, we should try to record something before we call it a night.'"
